Materials

Filter textiles from various polymers
The polymer is selected according to the chemistry, temperature and mechanical loading of the process.

The polymer mainly determines the chemical and temperature resistance of the textile. However, its suitability is assessed according to the specific concentration of the medium, the temperature and the length and method of contact. The weave and construction of the fabric is explained on pageFilter fabrics.

Polypropylene

Often used polymer for applications where its temperature and chemical resistance are suitable. Compatibility should be verified for specific media and operating conditions.

Polyester

Used in a variety of industrial applications. Suitability depends on the chemical composition of the medium, temperature, humidity and possible risk of hydrolysis.

Polyamide

May be suitable where mechanical properties are important. Chemical and temperature resistance must be verified for specific operation.

PVDF and special materials

Other polymers and material treatments are also being considered for specific chemical or temperature conditions. The choice is based on the requirements of the application, not just on the general name of the material.

When choosing a material, the main deciding factors are:

  • chemical resistance to acids, bases, oxidizing agents and hydrolysis
  • operating and peak temperature
  • mechanical strength during repeated cycles
  • required lifetime filter textiles

Relation to filter fabric

Material and fabric are not the same. The material mainly determines the chemical and temperature resistance, while the fabric type and weave determine the flow, particle capture and cake behavior.

Therefore, when comparing textiles, separate the resistance of the polymer itself from the influence of the weave, yarn and finish.

How to choose material

The material is chosen according to the concurrence of operational influences. The resistance tables are indicative: for specific chemistry, the concentration, temperature, mixture of substances and duration of exposure must be verified.

When designing, we most often take into account:

  • the chemical composition of the medium and the chemical environment
  • operating and peak temperature
  • mechanical load and frequency of filter cycles
  • required durability and stability of the fabric
  • method of washing, regeneration or cleaning
  • follow-up to filter cloth, bag or other filter media
